Two brothers sentenced in deadly 10-vehicle crash on Union Avenue in 2021
Two brothers were sentenced on Tuesday, November 5 for their involvement in a , according to Kern County Superior Court records. Jose Julian Catarino-Reyes was sentenced to five years in prison. He pleaded no contest on August 20, 2024, to vehicle manslaughter and hit-and-run, causing death or permanent injury. Antonio Catarino-Reyes was sentenced to four days for accessory and was credited with that amount, according to records.
On November 16, 2021, Bakersfield police responded to 21st Street at Union Avenue regarding a . BPD said Jose was driving aChevy Silverado and was heading northbound on 21st Street when he failed to slow for the traffic and struck a car, which caused a chain reaction. 10 vehicles were involved.
A woman was removed from a fully engulfed car by a Good Samaritan, with major injuries. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died.
The following day, BPD arrested Jose and Antonio in Madera. Speed was an apparent factor in the crash.
