A Reidsville woman is in jail in Rockingham County and an inmate faces new charges after an alleged attempt to smuggle drugs into the detention facility, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Rockingham County Sheriff's investigators on Tuesday charged Brianna Louise Cochran of 1619 Pecan Road in Reidsville with delivery of a schedule III controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance at a local confinement facility, according to a news release. She was placed in the Rockingham County Detention Facility on a $25,000 secured bond.

Devonte Kiewan McCain, 32, who was already an inmate at the jail, was the alleged intended recipient of the drugs, the sheriff's release said. He faces the same charges as Cochran and was issued a $40,000 secured bond on the new charges, the release said.

The sheriff's office said the drugs were identified, intercepted and confiscated before they reached the "inmate housing area of the jail facility,'' the release said.

As of Tuesday, the detention center will not accept medications of any kind, including over-the-counter-medicines, brought to the jail by inmates' friends, family member, or acquaintances, the sheriff's release said.

The jail's medical staff will acquire all necessary medications for inmates directly from approved pharmacies only, the release said.

The jail, beleaguered by 11 inmate deaths since 2021, saw the dismissal of a staff member this year for allegedly attempting to smuggle in unspecified contraband.

Nelettta Shamell Davis-Barnette, 41, of Reidsville, was terminated by the sheriff's office in March, but the type of alleged contraband was not disclosed by authorities.
