COLCHESTER, Conn. (WTNH) — Two pets are dead following a heavy structure fire Saturday night in Colchester.

Colchester first responders reported to a home on Elm St. where they witnessed a garage fire that extended into the attic and sidings of the home.

Crews rapidly began to extinguish the flames by stretching multiple fire hoses aimed at the garage, second floor, attic, and various sections of the home's exterior.

Five animals were rescued, and two, a cat and a dog, died as a result of smoke inhalation.

Two kittens were unharmed and a cat was sent for further treatment and is now doing well.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal's Office.
