The University of California, San Diego 's Sanford Stem Cell Institute will host three headliners – Nobel Prize laureates – at their 10th annual symposium Thursday and Friday.

The three will speak on their "revolutionary discoveries and applications to aging and regenerative medicine," according to a news release.

The prize winners include:

  • Elizabeth H. Blackburn, who won the Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.
  • Thomas R. Cech , who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for the discovery of the catalytic properties of RNA — the basis of the "RNA world" hypothesis, according to which life evolved from self-replicating RNA.
  • Ardem Patapoutian , of Scripps Research in La Jolla, who won the Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine for discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.
  • Other keynote speakers include John Dick , a Canada Research Chair in stem cell biology, and Amander Clark , director of the UCLA Center for Reproductive Science, Health and Education.

The event will be held at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine in the Duane Roth Auditorium.

There will be eight sessions from 8 a.m. to 6:40 p.m. Thursday, on topics including RNA regulation, stem cells, biotechnology and an exploration of telomere biology from several speakers, including Cech and Blackburn.

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, there will be five sessions about stem cell biology, neural stem cells and cancer stem cells. Multiple speakers are set to take part, including Patapoutian, Clark and Dick.
