The University of Maine System laid off 13 employees Friday and is reassigning more than 50 others, the Portland Press Herald reported .

The system's chief information officer, Robert Placido, sent an email to workers Friday afternoon outlining the changes, which are part of a restructuring of the IT department, according to the Press Herald. The system also eliminated three unfilled IT positions and is creating more than a half-dozen new positions and increasing salaries and assigning new titles to six positions.

Placido said in the email that the restructuring aims to be cost-neutral and will use the salary savings to expand other areas, according to the Press Herald.

System spokesperson Samantha Warren confirmed the layoffs to the Press Herald and said they account for roughly 6 percent of the department's 215 positions.
