U.N. Says 1 Million Gazans Face Worsening Conditions in Its Shelters

Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of the United Nations relief agency operating in Gaza, said that 1 million people are sheltering in 150 buildings and schools operated by the agency, Unwra, more than half of the total number of people displaced in Gaza. Based on a recent Gaza visit, Lazzarini warned that diseases were spreading in some places at rates 45 times more than in previous years, worsened by unsanitary conditions.
Nearly 190 people have been reported killed in U.N. premises, he said, in what he called that a blatant disregard to rules of war including international humanitarian law. "Since my first visit two weeks ago, it was evident the humanitarian situation in Gaza has become much, much worse for the people there," Lazzarini said.
