NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The University of New Haven (UNH) is expanding, launching a new marine and environmental sciences program.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Wednesday at the new location — the Canal Dock Boathouse on the Long Island Sound. The boathouse is about 30,000 square feet, and 7,500 feet will be dedicated to the science lab.

"With direct access to The Sound, students will be able to work in the environment that we're learning about in the classroom, which is really awesome," Sophia Rue, a fourth-year student at UNH, said.

"Our program in the marina and environmental sciences are among the best in the region and will only get better with this facility," Jens Frederiksen, president of the university, said.

Students will be able to learn about subjects like marine biology, marine policy and environmental science.
