Unsafe temperatures and dirty kitchens: latest restaurant inspections around Myrtle Beach, SC

The latest restaurant inspections by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture reported unsafe food storage and grimy buildup in restaurants around Myrtle Beach. The department is responsible for regularly inspecting the health and safety of retail food establishments in the state.

Of the 155 restaurants inspected in Horry and Georgetown County from Sept. 7 to Sept. 13, the date with the most recently available inspection reports, only three got scores below 90. Here's what inspectors found.

Sbarro the Original NY Pizza

Score: 80

A Sept. 9 routine inspection of Sbarro Coastal Grand Mall found several violations, including marina kept at an unsafe temperature, ready-to-eat foods like meatballs and sausage marked with dates over a week old and other ready-to-eat foods like mozzarella and sauce stored without marked dates.

The inspection report also notes that foods like pizza and stromboli — which restaurants can only have sitting out for specified time periods–didn't have marked discard times, a soiled mixing bowl was unwashed from the previous day and there was buildup on the conveyor oven, shelves and kitchen ceiling vents.

Golden Griddle Pancake House

Score: 82

At a routine inspection of Golden Griddle Pancake House on Sept. 10, personal items like cigarettes and cell phones were stored on food prep tables with clean dishes, foods like eggs and cheese–which can only be outside of temperature control for specified time periods–did not have documented times and boxes of single-use dishes and containers were stored on the floor.

Additionally, the inspection found food and debris accumulation on the floor and shelving of a refrigerator, as well as on floors throughout the kitchen. A follow-up inspection was scheduled for Sept. 20.

Blue Drum

Violations at a routine inspection of Blue Drum on Sept. 10 included improperly reheating crab meat and grits, cups stored on the floor and issues with building requirements for lights, doors and walls. A follow-up inspection is scheduled for Sept. 20.
