BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The teen who drove into a canal Saturday night in Boca Raton was not only allegedly very drunk, but drove from one side of the road to the other before landing in the canal in front of an off-duty police officer. That's according to a police report obtained by BocaNewsNow.com .
Amira Shiwraj, at 19, is too young to legally drink. But that allegedly didn't stop the Wellington teen from drinking to the point where a breath alcohol test revealed a content of .190 and .197. The legal limit for people legally allowed to drink in Florida is .08. Here's what a Boca Raton Police Officer wrote in a report after arresting Shiwraj:
"On 11/16/2024, at 1833 hours, I was dispatched to 3800 N Military Trail in reference to a crash. Upon arrival, I observed a white Kia sinking in the canal just west of Military Trail. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time. There was a witness on scene who was an off-duty deputy for Broward Sheriff's Office. The BSO Deputy testified that he was driving and observed the vehicle above traveling on the roadway bouncing back and forth from one curb to the other. The Deputy advised that the car had multiple flat tires, ran through a red light, went over a curb, through the grass area, and came to a final rest in a canal.
I explained to Amira that (I would) now begin a criminal investigation for DUI. Amira was read her Miranda warnings off of my pre-printed card, and advised she understood. Amira stated she was healthy and did not suffer from any medical conditions. In speaking with Amira I was able to smell the strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emanating from her person. I observed Amira's eyes to be bloodshot and watery. Amira struggled to answer any of my questions and would often just forget what was asked. I requested Amira to participate in Field Sobriety Exercises (FSEs) to which she accepted.
I then conducted FSE's. Amira displayed six out of the six clues in the eyes. Amira displayed 5 clues from the walk and turn to include: Cannot keep balance while listening to instructions, does not touch heel to toe, steps off the line, uses arms to balance, and incorrect number of steps (24 completed). Amira displayed 2 clues in the one leg stand to include sways while balancing and puts foot down. I then conducted the Finger to Nose. Amira missed the tip of her nose 3 times and forgot to bring her arm back down. Due to the totality of the circumstances and my training/experience, I felt the defendant was too impaired to operate a motor vehicle safely. The defendant was placed under arrest at 1935 hours, for driving under the influence. Amira was placed in handcuffs that were checked for tightness and double locked. The vehicle was towed.
Amira was transported to the BRPD DUI room. I conducted the 20-minute observation and operated the Intoxilyzer. Amira advised she was willing to provide a breath sample. The results were.190 and .197, It should be noted that while in the BRPD booking facility, Amira stated "I drank alcohol for no reason."
She was booked into he Palm Beach County Jail and later released pending trial.
