UPDATE: Human Remains Found on Deep Creek Road in Missoula

Missoula, MT ( KGVO-AM News ) - On October 17, 2024, at around 10:35 AM, the Missoula County Sheriff's Office provided more information about the human remains that were found on Deep Creek Road in June. Public Information Officer Jeannette Smith has the details.

"On the afternoon of June 29, 2024, Missoula County Sheriff's Office responded to a rural location on Deep Creek Road for a report of possible human remains," Smith said. "Missoula County Sheriff's Office Deputies and Detectives identified the remains as human."

According to Smith, a thorough investigation of the area where the remains were found was conducted.

"No identification or cause of death could be determined at that time and the remains were securely transported to the Montana Medical Examiner's Office in Missoula for further investigation," Smith said. "Assistance was also provided by members of the University of Montana Anthropology Department."

After several weeks of review, Smith said the results were inconclusive.

"The remains have been transported to the Forensic Science Division in Billings, Montana for a more in-depth examination," Smith said. "The remains found in the Clark Fork River on October 13 are unrelated to the remains found on Deep Creek Road. This is an active and ongoing investigation. More details will be provided as they become available."

Human Remains Found in the Clark Fork River At approximately 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, an individual reported what they believed were human remains in a log jam in the Clark Fork River, near the 6600 block of Mullan Road.

"Missoula County Sheriff's Office Deputies, Detectives, and Missoula Rural Fire responded to the scene," Smith said. "It was determined the remains were human and efforts were taken to recover them. With the assistance of Missoula County Search and Rescue, the remains were recovered and transported to Montana Medical Examiner's Office for further investigation."

This is also an ongoing investigation.
