Nov. 12—SUNBURY — A 66-year-old Sunbury man is now jailed after police said he was involved in the Friday abduction and assault of a female in the city.

Leroy Benner was taken into custody Tuesday night and charged with misdemeanor indecent assault, according to Sunbury Police Chief Travis Bremigen.

Bremigen said the arrest stems from an incident on Friday after police were notified of a reported abduction and sexual assault.

Friday's victim reported she initially thought she recognized the suspect and mistakenly got into the vehicle at around 9:30 a.m., near 4th and Chestnut streets. The suspect grabbed her and would not let her out before driving to an area behind the Shikellamy High School, where he attempted to take off her clothing, police said.

Sgt. Brad Slack said the man then drove away and pulled off of Cider Press Road, just outside Sunbury, where he once again attempted to sexually assault the victim before she was able to get away and run to a nearby house.

Bremigen also said the department received five more complaints of a man attempting to get women into a vehicle, all near Fourth and Market Street, and police are investigating.

Bremigen would not say if the incidents are connected but said more charges will be filed against Benner at a later date.

Bremigen said Benner was taken to Northumberland County Jail where he will wait to be arraigned by Sunbury District Judge Rachel Wiest Benner Wednesday morning.

Anyone with information or surveillance camera data from the area of Route 890 or Cider Press Road is also asked to call Northumberland County 911.
