A person died from a self-inflicted gunshot near Frederick Health Hospital on Saturday night after police responded to a call of a suicidal person, Frederick police said.

Lt. John Corbett said a third party called police at 8:17 p.m. about a suicidal person at Hospital Park, which is near the hospital and Trail Avenue, off West 7th Street.

Police arrived and set up a perimeter around the park — a city of Frederick recreation area — and the surrounding area.

In a news release late Saturday night, police said a Crisis Response Team, including trained crisis negotiators, went to the scene.

At around 8:40 p.m., the police department posted a message on its Facebook page saying that the area around the 300 block of West 7th Street was shut down as officers responded to a mental health crisis.

The hospital was locked down and ambulances were diverted to other hospitals.

Corbett said that shortly before 9 p.m., as officers were at the scene, the person fatally shot themself.

The press release said officers provided medical care at the scene until EMS arrived.

No one else was injured.

The news release said police do not plan to release the person's identity because of "the sensitive nature of this incident."

Corbett said there was no indication the person or the shooting was connected to anything at the hospital.
