HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) just confirmed they would be laying off about 100 employees, which comes just six months after laying off 1% of its workforce.

abc27 News reported back in April 2024 when the Pennsylvania-based healthcare giant, UPMC, announced it would be laying off about 1% of the company's approximately 100,000-person workforce.

At the time, UPMC had attributed the 1% workforce layoff to a "still-evolving, post-pandemic marketplace," that is affecting the healthcare industry.

The previous layoffs primarily affected non-clinical, non-member-facing, administrative staff.

Earlier this week, a spokesperson with UPMC confirmed they would be laying off about 100 additional active employees throughout their 100,000-person UPMC system.

"Targeted adjustments are frequently made to improve organizational efficiencies and eliminate redundancies," UPMC told abc27 News. "About 200 unfilled positions and about 100 active employees throughout the 100,000 person UPMC system may be affected."

UPMC did not make clear when these layoffs are expected to begin or what UPMC locations will be affected.

According to UPMC's website, the Pennsylvania healthcare provider has more than 40 hospitals and 800 outpatient sites across Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, and overseas. Currently, UPMC employs more than 100,000 people which includes over 5,000 physicians.
