Urging Kerry youth to vote – ‘Their votes can shape policies’

The National Youth Council of Ireland said up to 60,000 young people – that turned 18 in the last 12 months – are eligible to vote in this election. While a sizable grouping, the so-called 'young vote' has not always been as influential as it should considering the sense of detachment from politics many young people feel. MTU Student Union President Stephen Fogarty is currently trying to highlight the importance of getting young people out to vote in this election. With a short election campaign, and the deadline for registration now having expired, he said it is crucial to raise awareness and encourage young people to take action. Working in collaboration with Stephen is Daithí Fitzgerald. Daithí is a member of the Sinn Féin party and a student of politics and political activism. He has been advocating for young people to vote – regardless of their political persuasion – since he got involved in politics as a teenager. Daithí explained that amplifying this message to ensure no young person misses their opportunity to be heard on November 29 is crucial to shaping their future. He praised Stephen for his 'incredible work' for MTU students, saying he understands how voting can address the pressing issues they face. "For young people in Ireland, life is tough. Many are asking if they can afford to rent, run a car, find meaningful work, or start a family. The answer for many is no. I believe young people deserve better," said Daithí. "Young people are the future of Ireland, and their votes can shape the policies that will impact their lives." "Every month, I see people leaving Kerry in search of a better life abroad. This isn't just devastating our rural villages but also our towns," he added. Daithí said when he speaks to young people about voting, it's alarming how many don't, or won't, simply because they see little point. "I'm seeing an increasing disconnect between young people and politics," Daithí said. "My main message is that through your vote, you can deliver the change you want. Whether it's on housing, student accommodation, better healthcare services, car insurance prices, improved public transport, or simply putting more money in your pocket," he added.
