TUSCALOOSA, AL — In the rarest of upsets for the Crimson Tide football program, Vanderbilt stunned No. 1 Alabama 40-35 in Nashville Saturday for the first loss of the Kalen DeBoer era.

The loss marks the first time Alabama has fallen to the Commodores since 1984, when Vanderbilt beat the Crimson Tide 30-21 in Tuscaloosa. It was also the first time Vanderbilt has ever been a team ranked in the Associated Press Top 5.

Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe had two crucial turnovers in the game, but it was Alabama's poor defense that came up short time and again in the road loss. Overall, the Tide defense surrendered over 400 yards of offense to the Commodores.

Milroe finished the day 19-for-25 passing for 312 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 10 yards and one score.

Freshman receiver Ryan Williams led the team in yardage with 82 and had the only receiving touchdown of the game, along with tight end C.J. Dippre logging 66 yards through the air.

Germie Bernard also contributed 72 yards on four catches in the losing effort.

Williams scored late in the game on a 4th and 1 sweep run to bring the game to 40-35 Vanderbilt with just under three minutes left. But the Commodores held onto the ball on the following drive to run out the clock and claim its first-ever win over a No. 1 team.

The Crimson Tide (4-1, 1-1 SEC) will return to action on Saturday when South Carolina visits Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Oct. 12.

Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and ABC will carry the broadcast.
