Vape device collection boxes coming to Waco ISD schools

WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) – Vaping in schools has become a common problem across the country, but here in Central Texas the Waco Independent School District is tackling this problem head on.

University High School and Waco High School are partnering with V.O.I.C.E. (Viable Options In Community Endeavors). The organization has donated vape device collection boxes to Waco ISD. They will be installing these boxes on both campuses Thursday morning. The boxes will be used to help crack down on vaping in the district.

"It's very important. It's been an epidemic. It's becoming bigger and bigger with our vaping, and the students bringing them into schools is not making it very safe. So those boxes would be beneficial in a number of ways," says V.O.I.C.E. Community Coalition Coordinator Gena Stier.

Students in the two schools will be able to voluntarily put them in the boxes before they come through the metal detectors. Vapes are not allowed on school campuses, per House Bill 114..

If a student is caught on campus with a vape, they will be sent to the dicsiplinary alternative education program for 30 days.
