A large crowd of local residents and numerous local veterans attended the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Monday at the Carolina Field of Honor.

Blake Moore welcomed the crowd, and the Rev. Frank Thomas delivered the invocation. U.S. Marine Corps members presented the colors, and Thomas led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and also sang the National Anthem. Marine Corps members then retired the colors.

Scott Matthews announced a plaque presentation for the late Harry Triton Thetford, who served in the Marines from 1955 to 1962. Thetford was also the Carolina Field of Honor and Marine Corps historian.

Serah Haley performed an armed forces medley.

Jim Hoffman introduced the keynote speaker, retired Lt. Gen. Arnold Ulmer, who served in the 194th Armored Brigade during the Korean and Vietnam wars and among other accolades was awarded a Silver Star.

The Carolina Field of Honor in Kernersville, established in 2014, stands as a tribute to the men and women who served in the armed forces.

Members of President-elect Donald Trump's transition team are drawing up a list of military officers to be fired, potentially to include the Joint Chiefs of Staff, two sources said, in what would be an unprecedented shakeup at the Pentagon. The planning for the firings is at an early stage after Trump's Nov. 5 election victory and could change as Trump's administration takes shape, said the sources, who are familiar with the Trump transition and requested anonymity to speak candidly about the plans. One of the sources questioned the feasibility of a mass firing at the Pentagon.

The four drones were designed to carry bombs, but instead the men of Ukraine's Khartia brigade pack them with food, water and handwarmers and launch them in darkness toward the front line, a 15-minute flight away. Guided by the drone's night-vision camera, he drops the 10-kilogram (22-pound) packages one by one as close as he can to the position where as many as five infantrymen battle Russian forces in the late autumn chill. For him, all that matters is the distance he measures in the meters (yards) that Russian forces advance or retreat in the front-line sector that is his responsibility.

It is up to the United States to decide what to do with Taiwan's decommissioned HAWK anti-aircraft missiles, the island's Defence Minister Wellington Koo said on Wednesday, when asked if they would be transferred to Ukraine. The United States and its allies have provided billions of dollars of weapons to Ukraine since Russia attacked the country two years ago in what Moscow calls a "special military operation". Koo, speaking to reporter at parliament and responding to a question on whether Taiwan's decades-old HAWK missiles could go to Ukraine, said Taiwan no longer needed the weapons and their decommissioning was being handled in accordance with regulations.

President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump met in the Oval Office for nearly two hours on Wednesday, resuming a hallmark of America's peaceful transfer of power that Trump himself flouted in 2020. President Biden spoke first, calling for a "smooth transition" and telling Trump he would do "everything we can to make sure you're accommodated." "Politics is tough, and it's, in many cases, not a very nice world but it is a nice world today," Trump said.

Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson said she was "stunned" Tuesday by Donald Trump's intention to nominate Fox & Friends host Pete Hegseth as his Secretary of Defense. "From silly diner interviews on Weekend Fox and Friends to Secretary of Defense?" Carlson wrote on X. "I never thought I'd say I'm stunned about any pick after the election but nominating Pete Hegseth for this incredibly important role? Yes he's a veteran ... and?" Others with ties to Fox were "stunned" as well, but in a more posi
