CHICAGO (WLS) - Gunshots could be heard on surveillance video during the shooting of a retired Chicago police sergeant in the North Center neighborhood Monday morning.

Officers returned to the neighborhood a day after the 74-year-old was shot and critically wounded during a brazen daytime attack that has left some in the North Center community on edge.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7.to watch "I'm still kind of upset here an officer, right in front of my show, a retired officer who gave all of his time to protect the city to protect us and we cannot protect him " neighborhood business owner Gary Kinsler said.

Police said the shooting happened at the busy North Center intersection of North Lincoln and West Berteau avenues just after 9 a.m.

Investigators said the 74-year-old retired sergeant was in his vehicle when neighbors heard gunshots. That's when the victim was found shot outside of his vehicle on the ground next to his Jeep Cherokee.

A camera from an auto shop captured the moment shots were fired. Seconds later, two people were seen running from the area.

Concerned residents said they found the victim on the ground next to his vehicle.

He had been shot twice in the left arm and suffered a graze wound to the neck. He was rushed to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition.

"it's sad when you're in the shop and you hear gunshots fifty feet away from you and where is it going? .Let's hope and pray things get better," Kinsler said.

Police took a person of interest into custody. It's little comfort to someone who remain concerned that their neighborhood isn't safe anymore.

"I hope and pray first of all for the officer for a quick recover," Kinsler said. "I pray for his family and I pray for my city and i pray for my city."
