VIDEO: French Quarter brawl erupts into shootout, leaving woman injured

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A fight in the French Quarter escalated into a shootout early Friday morning near several bars, according to the NOPD.

Authorities said a woman was shot around 1 a.m. in the 600 block of Iberville Street near Chartres Street.

Less than 24 hours after arriving in New Orleans, the Weigold family from Boston witnessed the violent incident from their Airbnb balcony on Iberville.

Cell phone video captured by the family shows a heated fight breaking out on the street below.

"We just see this one guy get jumped," Zachary Weigold said. "There's maybe eight guys on top of him. One had a baton or a pipe."

In the video, someone is seen wielding what appears to be a pipe and hitting another person. A woman exits the nearby Ghost Bar holding a chair, which she throws at one of the people involved.

After picking up the chair and throwing it again, shots are fired, striking her. The footage suggests the woman may have returned fire.

"I just see a muzzle and hear a gunshot, and me and my family just hit the deck," Weigold said. "My heart was racing a little bit. I'm like, 'Oh, this is happening, okay.'"

Weigold estimates hearing at least 10 shots. Surveillance video from a nearby business shows police arriving within minutes to assist the woman and secure the crime scene.

"I feel the city is safe, but I also watch my back," said Evelyn Crawford, a New Orleans resident. "I keep an eye on my surroundings, and I know what to look out for. People need to trust their gut if something feels off."

Despite the frightening experience, the Weigolds are still making the most of their trip.

"We're going to enjoy our second day here. Everything is going nice and smooth, and let's keep it that way," Weigold said.

Police are still searching for the suspect and have not publicly released any further details. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact NOPD or CrimeStoppers.
