Maloney characterized herself as a "pragmatic, progressive voice" in a press release, and emphasized tackling the city's affordability crisis and safeguarding New Yorkers against the "extremism" of the incoming Trump administration.

The District 4 race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the city, with one candidate, Rachel Storch, already choosing to forgo the city's matching funds program, meaning her campaign won't have to adhere to mandatory spending caps.

Aside from Storch, a former Missouri state representative and the current chief operating officer of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue, other candidates include Vanessa Aronson, a former diplomat and president of the Lexington Democratic Club; Ben Wetzler, a former Democratic district leader and current state housing department official; Luke Florczak, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran; and attorney Faith Bondy, president of the Samuel J. Tilden Democratic Club.

District 4 covers a significant portion of Manhattan's East Side, from the Upper East Side and Midtown to Stuyvesant Town. The election will take place in Nov. 2025.
