The following volunteer opportunities for individuals 18 years and older are published weekly in The Times Leader. Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteer: assist customers in the Gift Shoppe

Hours: Tuesday, Thursday or Friday 5 to 8 p.m.

Requirements: training provided

Volunteers: Emergency Department

Hours: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays and weekends

Requirements: training provided
Greater Wilkes-Barre Association for the Blind

Volunteers: assist with vision screening at local preschools and elementary schools

Hours: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. – days vary.

Requirements: must enjoy working with small children and parents.
Greater Pittston YMCA

Volunteers: general monitoring of facility use and night cleaning duties.

Hours: Monday through Friday 6 to 9 p.m.

Requirements: criminal/child abuse background check; CPR/First Aid certification
Heart Association, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteers: assist with answering phones and assisting with mailings.

Hours: flexible
John Heinz Institute, Wilkes-Barre Twp.

Volunteers: assist at the reception desk directing visitors, delivering flowers and cards to patients.

Hours: as needed

Requirements: ability to work on your own, communicate easily with people and ability to keep information confidential.
Hospice Care of the Visiting Nurse Association, Edwardsville

Volunteers: provide a variety of supportive services to Hospice’s patients, families and staff.

Hours: flexible

Requirements: must be at least 18 years of age, volunteer will receive ongoing support and training.
Jewish Community Center, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteers: assist office staff answering phone and occasional typing

Hours: weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; weekends 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Volunteers: assisting staff with painting, raking and other chores.

Hours: weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; evenings 4 to 8 p.m.
Mercy Center Nursing Unit, Dallas

Volunteers: assist the Activities Department with various activities, transporting patients, visiting residents and helping with parties and special events.

Hours: various during the week

Requirements: orientation provided
Northeast Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Avoca

Volunteers: distribute posters advertising upcoming events in stores, libraries, colleges, and everywhere possible.

Hours: flexible
SPCA of Luzerne County, Inc., Wilkes-Barre

Volunteers: kennel cleaning; general office cleaning; cemetery maintenance; animal grooming; wash emergency vehicles; registration at rabies clinics; painting and help as needed for fundraising events.

Hours: weekends 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; weekdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; evenings 5 to 7 p.m.

Requirements: staff will assist with instructions.
