Vote Counting Now Underway in Nail-Biter Historic Election
Votes cast in person Tuesday in the 2024 election are now being counted in most counties in Kentucky and Indiana, where polls closed at 6 p.m. ET, the earliest polls to close in the country.
No surprise: Donald Trump has a big lead early on in these two deep-red states. In Kentucky, he has won more than 66 percent of the vote counted so far, compared to less than 32.5 percent for Harris.
In Indiana, the GOP presidential candidate has won 71 percent of the vote.
But early returns in the biggies—the seven battleground states—will come soon thereafter, starting at 7 p.m., when polls close in Georgia, a swing state where counting traditionally happens quickly.
Counting will begin in North Carolina right after polls close at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by the biggest battleground state of all—Pennsylvania, where polls close at 8 p.m. ET, along with parts of Michigan. Both are "Blue Wall" states where Donald Trump made a stunning upset over Hillary Clinton in 2016, but which Joe Biden won in 2020.
Then, at 9 p.m. ET, all polls will be closed in Michigan, along with the third blue wall state of Wisconsin and Arizona, a key Sun Belt swing state. The latest battleground state polls to close are in Nevada, at 10 p.m. ET.
