Literacy coalition

The Central Texas Literacy Coalition will meet at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Bank and Trust Wealth Center, 1711 Lake Success Drive.

Roof repair program

Grassroots Community Development is accepting applications through Nov. 4 for its roof repair program for low-income families in Waco.

Applications are available at the Grassroots office, 1624 Colcord Ave., or at grassrootswaco.org .

Money available this year is expected be enough for 23 roofs. The program is in its 10th year and has replaced about 200 roofs so far.

Dancing with Waco Stars

The Family Abuse Center will hold its ninth annual Dancing with the Waco Stars fundraiser Thursday at the Waco Hippodrome Theatre, 724 Austin Ave.

Founded in Waco in 1980, the Family Abuse Center serves victims of domestic violence across six counties in Central Texas.

This year's theme is Once Upon A Time.

Bill Morgan Memorial 5K

The Bill Morgan Memorial 5K Run/Walk benefiting the Robinson Little League and the Surrey Village Neighborhood Association will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at 1125 Surrey Ridge Road.

Entry is $45 for the 5K, $20 for the fun run.

State of City, County

The Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce's State of the City and County Luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 3 in Baylor University's Hurd Welcome Center, 901 S. University Parks Drive.

Waco Mayor Jim Holmes and McLennan County Judge Scott Felton will give presentations.

Senior health fair

AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP will hold its 32nd annual Senior Source Health and Information Fair from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Richland Mall, 6001 W. Waco Drive.

The fair will provide seniors and caregivers health information and access to multiple services.

Services will include health screenings, flu vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines, available free of charge with Medicare or an insurance card, presented with an ID. Other exhibitors will provide health information relevant to seniors, caregivers and the public. Information regarding resources related to aging services, long-term care and legal help will also be provided.

Taste of the Mediterranean

Friday is the deadline to register for a McLennan County AgriLife Extension Taste of the Mediterranean class scheduled for 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at 4224 Cobbs Drive.

Participants can learn how to cook the Mediterranean way to promote one of the world's healthiest diets.

Cost is $25.

Michael Martin Murphey

Michael Martin Murphey will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at the Waco Hippodrome Theatre, 724 Austin Ave., in a benefit for the Taylor Museum of Waco & McLennan County History.

Out of the Darkness walk

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness Waco Walk will start at 6 p.m. Saturday at Brazos Park East, 3516 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The event provides community, connection, healing and hope for survivors of suicide loss and those with lived experience.

Every dollar participants raise will support the foundation's investment in life-saving research, education, advocacy and support for people affected by suicide.

Antique farm machinery

The Waco Antique Farm Machinery Club will hold its seventh annual fall show Friday and Saturday at Tonkawa Park in Crawford.

A tractor ride will start at 4:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a dinner at 524 E. Fourth St. Cost for dinner is $15.

A tractor and car show will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Create Better Health

The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District will start a six-week Create Better Health Class from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Oct. 3 in The Center at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, 1115 Columbus Ave.

The class will cover eating well and staying active on a budget.

It will meet weekly from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.
