Waco-area news briefs: Fall Fossil Festival set for Saturday at mammoth monument

Sic 'em Science Day

Sic 'em Science Day 2024 will start at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mayborn Museum, 1300 S. University Parks Drive.

Baylor University scientists will showcase their latest research through hands-on experiences. Attendees will be able to engage with interactive exhibits, participate in experiments and meet the people driving innovation at Baylor.

The event will also include the Chemistry Magic Show, where science and spectacle collide in a mesmerizing display of chemical reactions.

Walk to End Alzheimer's

The 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer's will start at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Legends Crossing, 5100 Crosslake Parkway.

Registration and check-in will start at 9 a.m., with the opening ceremony at 10.

Family-friendly activities and sponsor information will be available along the walk.

The walk is free to attend, but participants must register at Texas?pg=entry&fr_id=17954.

Walking tales

The Heart of Texas Storytelling Guild will hold its Walking Tales event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery.

Interpreters stationed throughout this historic cemetery will share stories about the life and times of renowned, legendary and infamous people laid to rest there. The event is free and open to the public.

Ham radio event

The Speegleville Amateur Radio Club will hold a free ham radio event starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at Hewitt Park, 801 S. Hewitt Drive, as part of the worldwide Boy Scout Jamboree on the Air. The club will set up a ham radio station and help participants connect with operators around the world. Scouts, Cub Scouts and the general public are invited to attend.

Fall Fossil Festival

The Waco Mammoth National Monument's annual Fall Fossil Festival will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the park, 6220 Steinbeck Bend Drive.

The free event will include family-friendly activities, local exhibitors, live camels, pumpkin decorating, treats, food and a mock dig pit experience.

Tours of the Dig Shelter will also be available for the regular fee.

Roof repair program

Grassroots Community Development is accepting applications through Nov. 4 for its roof repair program for low-income families in Waco.

Applications are available at the Grassroots office, 1624 Colcord Ave., or at grassrootswaco.org .

Money available this year is expected be enough for 23 roofs. The program is in its 10th year and has replaced about 200 roofs so far.

Instant Pot holiday cooking

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of McLennan County and McLennan Community College Continuing Education will hold an Instant Pot Cooking: for the Holidays class from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

Instructor Rachel Esquivel, an Extension agent, will teach about how to make quick and delicious sides for holiday gatherings.

The cost for the class is $30, and the registration deadline is Monday.

Medicare education

The Area Agency on Aging will hold a free Medicare education meeting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at 1514 S. New Road.

People approaching Medicare qualification can learn about the federal program, including how to avoid scams and fraud. The meeting will also discuss the differences between supplemental insurance and Medicare Advantage, and suggest tips on saving money.

Light refreshments will be served.

Mum making

The Martin Museum in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center at Baylor University will offer daily workshops for participants to make their own Baylor homecoming mums, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22-25.

Supplies will be provided. The workshops are free and open to all Baylor students while supplies last.

VA blood drive

The Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Carter BloodCare will hold a blood drive from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday in Building 6 at the medical center, 4800 Memorial Drive.

Pumpkin Fest

Wilbert Austin Sr. Park, 401 Hood St., will hold Pumpkin Fest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The free event will feature face and pumpkin painting, pies, snacks and hot dogs. Costumes are encouraged.

Beverly Hills Trunk or Treat

Beverly Hills City Hall, 3418 Memorial Drive, will hold its annual Trunk or Treat from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Mooreville fish fry

Mooreville Methodist Church will hold its annual fish fry from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the church, 206 Farm-to-Market Road 2643 in Chilton.

Cost is $15 per plate, available for dine in or to go.
