PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A charity making strides.

Walk for Wishes Peoria was held at Donovan Park on Sunday and was organized by Make-A-Wish Illinois.

Several people gathered, including people in costumes, to walk along the Rock Island Trail.

Many of the teams registered for the walk were families who have had children go through the Make-A-Wish process.

"Trying to teach the kids to give back," said Zach Ponder, the chairman of Walk for Wishes. "We want to show them that it's important to give back. It's important to be a community, to gather together, people that are like minded and have the same thoughts and values as you and to just give back to those that need it most."

Organizers of the event say there is something new this year that gives the fundraiser an even more personal aspect.

"We've got pennants this year," said Janet Bantz Glavin, senior community engagement manager of Make-A-Wish Illinois. "You'll see the names of wish children on them who people are walking for. They've had direct experience with a wish or they know someone that has a wish coming up. It really has a game changing impact for children in their battle with their critical illnesses."

Tanners doughnuts and cider were also provided as refreshments at the walk along with Scooter's Coffee.
