Warm, dry conditions forecast for Omaha and eastern Nebraska
Above-normal temperatures and dry conditions are expected through Saturday this week in Omaha and eastern Nebraska.
High temperatures in the upper 60s are forecast through Thursday, according to Paul Fajman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Valley. The prediction is for a high of 65 degrees Monday followed by 67 Tuesday and Wednesday.
"There's not going to be a lot of variability to the forecast this week," Fajman said. "It will basically be rinse and repeat for most of the days."
Thursday's high in Omaha is again expected to be 67. Those temperatures are significantly higher than the average high of 52 degrees for Omaha at this time of year.
Windy conditions and the absence of any meaningful chances for rain will, however, increase fire danger. Tuesday and Thursday winds are forecast to be 15 to 20 mph, gusting up to 30 mph.
A Red Flag Warning is issued by the National Weather Service to alert the public and firefighters of extreme fire danger. It is issued when a combination of high temperatures, very low humidity and strong winds create an environment that is ideal for wildland fire combustion and rapid spread.
A bit of uncertainty creeps into the forecast Friday when a cold front is expected to move through the area. The prediction, Fajman said, is for a high of 61 degrees accompanied by northwest winds.
A high of 61 also is predicted for Saturday, followed by 57 Sunday. Rain is in the forecast for Sunday, Fajman said.
"We are watching a trough now out over the West Coast and waiting to see when it comes in over the Plains," he said. "That will bring a chance for rain Sunday, about a 35% chance right now."
