Alerts Issued for Our Region

  • FREEZE WARNING tonight for Monroe, Summers, Mercer, Tazewell, Giles, and Bland counties

  • Tonight features a slow decrease in clouds as the effects of high pressure begin to set in. The big story tonight will be the chill! We'll see low temperatures drop back into the upper 20s! The last time we had a low temperature in the 20s was back on April 22nd, so needless to say, this is the coldest air we've seen in the region for in quite some time.

Thursday sees our temperatures begin to rebound. A strong high pressure system moving out of Canada into the northern US on Wednesday will move directly over the area on Thursday. This will provide partly to mostly sunny skies and temperatures rebounding into the low 50s. Another frosty night is expected Thursday night into Friday as low temperatures fall back to around 30 degrees with mostly clear skies expected.

Friday will be much warmer than Thursday as high pressure shifts off to our east. As a result, we will pick up a southerly breeze, which will make for a much warmer afternoon with highs in the mid 60s. High school football games will be dry with mostly clear skies, but much like last week, those games will be chilly by the end of the fourth quarter, so dress accordingly, as we'll be back into the mid 40s by the end of area games.

Saturday continues the warming trend with plenty of sunshine expected and highs in the upper 60s as our southerly breeze continues. That's close to normal for this time of year in terms of high temperatures. For those attending Bridge Day, the weather looks absolutely stellar and the wind will be relaxed for those dare-deviling off the bridge!

Sunday keeps the dry weather pattern continuing, as high pressure continues to sit over the area. This means storm systems will be moving around us, not through us. Mostly sunny skies are expected with highs pushing to near 70.

Monday once again will be dry with temperatures in the low 70s with plenty of sunshine expected. That's a nearly 30 degree rebound in high temperature from what we saw today over the course of just a few days!

Tuesday keeps the sunshine around with high pressure in control with highs in the low 70s.

Fire season has started: Here's what you need to know

Wednesday is still dry with mostly sunny skies expected yet again and high temperatures in the low 70s.

Looking ahead in your extended forecast, our dry pattern will be continuing. This is not good for our drought and fire threats, which are slowly increasing with each dry day. Temperatures will be slightly above normal Thursday through Saturday with highs near 70. We'll watch for the potential for a few scattered showers by late Friday, but the dominant weather pattern still looks dry.
