Warriors come through with 10th-inning victory

WEST PITTSTON — Chris Murphy’s RBI single with one out in the top of the 10th brought home Trent Grove to give Wyoming Area a thrilling 5-4 extra-innings victory over North Pocono on Wednesday in the first round of the District 2 Class 3A tournament.
Starter Dylan Maloney pitched nine innings for the eighth-seeded Warriors, striking out eight. Ron Klepadlo came on in the 10th and recorded the win against the No. 9 Trojans (7-8).
P.J. Bone led the Warriors (8-7) with three hits, including a triple. Randy McDermott doubled and drove in two runs.
Next up for Wyoming Area is top-seeded Valley View in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Crestwood, the 15th and final seed in the 3A bracket, put a scare into the defending district champs, taking a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth before No. 2 Tunkhannock scored four runs to take the game.
Tunkhannock starter Rich Condeelis was forced to leave the mound with an injury after three innings but was able to re-enter to bat in the sixth, coming through with a two-run single. He finished with three RBI.
Bryson Reeves earned the win in relief for the Tigers (13-2), allowing just one hit in three innings. Chase Knott came on for the save in the seventh.
Tunkhannock’s Mike Papi and Crestwood’s Zack Berg each hit a solo home run. Shane Casey struck out four for the Comets (3-13).
The Tigers will host Dallas Friday in the quarterfinals.

Greg Petorak and Deep Patel each knocked a two-RBI single in the fifth inning as Dallas held on for the win in first round action.
Marc Noyalis earned the win for the No. 7 Mountaineers (9-6) and helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Dallas moves on to play at Tunkhannock Friday.
Ryan Fletcher struck out 10 for the No. 10 Cavaliers and teammate Fran Notarianni went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Kyle Miller struck out 10 in four innings and No. 12 Berwick went on the road and hammered the No. 5 Wildcats in five innings.
Dan Curtin led the Bulldogs (5-10) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Joey Favata added two hits while T.J. Lashock and Clay DeNoia drove in two runs apiece.
Miller and Ben Bower held the Wildcats (9-6) to just three hits.
The Bulldogs will head back on the road Friday to meet West Scranton in the quarterfinals.

The 11th-seeded Crusaders suffered a rare opening-round loss in the district playoffs, falling on the road to the sixth-seed Comets.
Abington Heights advances to Friday’s quarterfinals, where the Comets will travel to face No. 3 Pittston Area.
Coughlin’ finished at 6-10.
CLASS 2A Holy Redeemer 9, Lakeland 7
Christian Choman blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the No. 7 Royals a dramatic extra-innings win in their District 2 opener.
After Redeemer (9-7) tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth, Choman took over on the mound for the final two innings, striking out four to earn the win. Steve Ruch finished 2-for-4 with a double and four runs scored.
Eric Grabowski went the distance for the 10th-seeded Chiefs (6-9).
The Royals will play at Meyers on Friday in the quarterfinals.

The second-seeded Mohawks began their district title defense with a decisive four-inning shutout of rival GAR.
John Nargoski (double, 2 RBI), Victor Garcia (double, RBI) and C.J. Szafran had two hits apiece for Meyers (14-2). Corey Dubil allowed just one hit in three innings for the win.
Pat Smith and Aaron Moore both doubled for the No. 15 Grenadiers (2-13).
Meyers hosts Holy Redeemer in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Josh Everett went 3-for-3 with a solo home run as the top-seeded Black Knights opened with a five-inning victory.
Bryan Mathers also homered while Tyler McGovern (double, 3 RBI), Adam Paulauskas (two doubles, 2 RBI) and Cole Barbacci (double, 3 RBI) led the hit parade for Lehman (15-1).
Three pitchers combined to hold the No. 16 Chargers (0-15) to three hits.
The Knights now face Mid Valley in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Zach Kollar led Hanover Area (11-4) at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Mike Sulcoski added two hits and an RBI for the Hawkeyes, who will host Riverside in Friday’s quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Vikings won big in their opening game of the Class 2A tournament.
Riverside (9-6) will take on No. 4 Hanover Area on Friday in the quarterfinals.
No. 12 Northwest, which moved up from Class A this season, finished the season 6-9.
Mountain View 5, West Side Tech 3
No. 3 Mountain View (11-4) held off a challenge from the 14th-seeded Titans to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals against Dunmore.
West Side Tech’s season ends at 3-12.
CLASS A MMI Prep 14, Wyoming Seminary 5
Fran Swankoski went 2-for-5 with five RBI to fuel the fourth-seeded Preppers to their third win of the year over Wyoming Seminary.
Ryan Forte also had a big game for the Preppers (6-9), recording three hits and four runs.
MMI will play top-seeded Lackawanna Trail in the semifinals on Friday.
Spencer Youngman led the No. 5 Blue Knights (4-11), finishing 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
