Warwick drops Radnor in first round of PIAA Class 2A field hockey playoffs
Calli Martin is not letting herself get too low or too high while on the field hockey field.
The Warwick junior, playing in an elimination game and the Warriors' last home game of the season, refused to let any of those aspects put more pressure on her.
"I don't think we did have any (extra pressure)," Martin said. "We knew we had to get the job done, and to do that we just had to keep our energy the same."
Having an even keel paid off for Martin, as she scored two goals in Warwick's 4-1 victory over Radnor in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A field hockey playoffs on Tuesday at Lititz.
"Calli's awesome," Warwick coach Ron Stief said. "She's an amazingly skilled hockey player and she's as cool as can be. Her stick control is amazing, on par with Karys (Craver)."
Martin was set up well on both of her goals, and she is well aware of how much she and her teammates mesh to produce scoring chances.
"It gives you a lot of relief," Martin said. "You know you have backup if something goes wrong, and everyone passes very well so we know we will get opportunities."
Martin's first goal came on a corner. Annalaye Glenn flipped a shot towards the goal and Martin deflected it in the air for a 1-0 lead with 7:16 left in the first quarter.
Craver set up Martin's second goal with a nice pass from right to left from near the top of the circle, which Martin played into the net for a 3-0 advantage with 27 seconds left in the half.
Those goals — along with tallies by Craver and Bree Zoccolo — put the District Three champion Warriors (23-2) into Saturday's quarterfinals against Hershey at a site and time to be determined. Facing one of the traditional powers in District Three may be a big deal on paper, but again, Martin does not expect it to affect her or her teammates emotionally.
"I think we just have to keep our energy the same again, to go straight ahead toward our goal and be confident," Martin said.
Craver's goal was an unassisted score with 6:21 left in the second quarter. Zoccolo's goal was on a penalty stroke with 4:00 left in the game.
Radnor (16-7), the fifth-place team from District One, and Warwick each had 10 shots on goal. Radnor had 12 corners to Warwick's 10.
Warriors goalie Taryn Toburen made nine saves.
"Good for her," Stief said. "She's a first-team L-L Section One all-star. She needs to step up too, and we needed her tonight."
The victory also finished off a perfect home season for Warwick. Their two losses were at Penn Manor and at a neutral site against Manheim Township.
Juliet Wildt made six stops for Radnor, including stopping Kayla Gockley on a fourth-quarter penalty stroke.
Radnor's lone goal was an unassisted tally by Alex Decain with 4:43 left.
Hershey, the fourth-place team out of District Three, defeated Peters Township 5-0 on Tuesday.
