State police are investigating after a Washington police officer was involved in a two-vehicle crash while responding to a reported stabbing Wednesday night.

The Washington police department posted a statement from Chief Steve Devenney to its Facebook page.

According to Devenney, at about 10:50 p.m. officers were called to the 1200 block of Summerlea Avenue for a domestic situation in which one person was reported to have been stabbed.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Jefferson and Hall avenues. According to Devenney, the accident involved a police vehicle occupied by one officer and a privately owned vehicle with a driver and no passengers.

According to state police, the officer was driving north on Jefferson while the other driver was headed west on Hall.

The front passenger side of the police vehicle struck the front driver side of the other vehicle. According to state police, the driver was ejected from the vehicle after the car spun out and struck a pole.

The police vehicle flipped onto the driver side. State police are conducting interviews and reviewing surveillance footage as part of the investigation.

According to Devenney, both drivers were transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.

When reached by phone Thursday, Devenney declined to provide additional details about the crash beyond the statement shared on social media.
