ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A commercial building on Canal Street is being torn down following a massive fire, which led to one firefighter getting injured. Reports surfaced just before 8 p.m. Monday of a four-alarm fire at 53 Canal Street , a vacant building. A News 8 photojournalist at the scene early on saw smoke billowing from the building into the air. Firefighters said there was heavy fire on the first and second floors of the building. All occupants were evacuated from the apartment building next door. Additional alarms were called due to the size of the building and the amount of fire. According to the Rochester Fire Department, one firefighter was taken to the hospital for a minor injury. "From what we know at the moment it was a vacant structure, potential renovations, but we have no other information. They have contacted the owner, and he will be on scene shortly," said Lt. Jackeline Sierra, the RFD public information officer. "We have over 14 companies on scene right now, so about 56 firefighters," said Sierra. It took three hours to get the fire under control, but RFD said the building's structural integrity was compromised. Parts of the building collapsed, which led to the building's demolition. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. This is a developing story, check back later for more details.
