PORTLAND, Oregon (KMID/KPEJ) – A dog is recovering after a foot-long stick impaled him. Now, the medical team that treated him is sharing pictures of his injury.

The owner of "Odin", an English Spaniel, said he was playing in their yard when he started crying in pain. That's when they found the stick stuck in his side. Dovelewis Veterinary Hospital treated Odin and said his owners did the smart thing by leaving the stick in his side.

"He got some pain medication, he got some IV fluid therapy, and then we took some x-rays to see if that stick was penetrating into his chest, which would make the situation much more complicated for Odin, thankfully it was not," said Dr. Stacy Montgomerie, an Emergency Veterinarian.

The Hospital said the stick was just under the skin, so after surgery, Odin has fully recovered. If you want to avoid something similar, Dovelewis recommends not having loose branches in your yard and only using proper toys, not sticks, to play fetch.
