Watch: Internet believes the spirit of adorable squirrel Peanut, who was euthanised, crashed Kamala Harris' concession speech
After a highly anticipated election battle between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, the latter emerged as the winner. However, just before Kamala Harris was about to give her concession speech in Washington, D.C., an unexpected star stole the spotlight—a tiny squirrel that quickly captured the internet's attention. Dubbed "the spirit of peanut" by online users, the squirrel's surprise appearance became a viral moment.
P'nut, fondly called Peanut by his fans, was an eastern gray squirrel rescued in 2017 by Mark Longo after its mother was killed in a car accident in New York City.
Unable to find a shelter, Longo bottle-fed Peanut for eight months before deciding to release it into the wild.
However, the squirrel returned to Longo's porch a day later with half of its tail missing, marking the end of its brief "wildlife career."
Despite it being illegal to keep squirrels as pets in New York, Longo cared for Peanut in Connecticut without a license.
Longo had been in the process of certifying Peanut as an educational animal when authorities seized the squirrel and euthanised him.
During their time together, Longo created an Instagram account for Peanut, which by October 2024 had gained over 534,000 followers.
Now, as Peanut remains a beloved figure, many believe the "spirit of Peanut" still lives on, and they are sure they spotted Peanut running across the stage just before Harris made her speech.
After one took to X to post the video, noting, "Wild squirrel appeared on the stage ahead of Kamala Harris' concession speech. You can't make this stuff up!," people went 'nuts' about it.
