Water levels along Missouri River at Plattsmouth to remain steady

PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (WOWT) - Water levels are high in Plattsmouth, especially along Beach Road north of town. Residents there have spent the last few days preparing for the worst.

"We moved everything out of the basement, and the houses, and this truck shop," said longtime resident Roger Schmidt. "We also put in a new dirt pile for some extra protection. I know what these events kind of look like. It's not like in 2019 or 2011 when the floodwater came up rapidly and we didn't have time to prepare, but this time we had a lot of time to be ready."

Just like residents took safety measures, so did Cass County.

Schmidt told 6 News emergency management told him and other residents near the water to voluntarily evacuate. He also said he's seen officials come in to monitor the levels over the past few days.

"Surveyed the top of the water and did all the calculations for downtown Plattsmouth over to Beach Road," Schmidt said.

Despite taking precautions, Cass County EMA says they expect the Missouri River to remain steady at 32.5 feet for now. They are monitoring areas like the city's lift station that is underwater. They don't expect the city's water treatment plant to be affected.

Schmidt hopes things calm down soon.

"So, next week we can move everybody back to their basements and get things back to normal," Schmidt said.

About 10 minutes away, both Main Street and River Road are closed until the waters recede.
