Watertown woman arrested after allegedly committing welfare fraud

Sep. 19—WATERTOWN — A Watertown woman was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly committing welfare fraud.

City police charged Leeah M. Harris, 36, of St. Mary St., with first-degree falsifying an instrument, third-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree welfare fraud, misuse of food stamps, and fourth-degree grand larceny, all felonies.

According to police records, Harris allegedly intentionally omitted the income of another member of her household when submitting an application for HEAP, resulting in her receiving $1,470 in HEAP benefits to which she was not entitled.

Police also allege that Harris wrongfully obtained $7,684 in SNAP benefits and failed to notify Jefferson County Department of Social Services of a change in her household income.

Harris was processed and is awaiting arraignment on Sept. 17.
