West Bloomfield Parks to host annual free Heroes Appreciation Breakfast

West Bloomfield Parks has partnered with West Bloomfield Township, the West Bloomfield School District and the West Bloomfield Public Library to host the annual free Heroes Appreciation Breakfast from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at West Bloomfield Middle School, at 6000 Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield Twp.

The Heroes Appreciation Breakfast is to honor the hard work and sacrifices made by those in the military and to recognize those individuals and their families. The event is presented by Senior Benefits Plus.

The event will include: breakfast; a gift bag for each veteran; a presentation by the West Bloomfield Police & Fire Honor Guard; Guest Speaker Brigadier General Ravindra Wagh; and live entertainment by HarmonyTown Chorus.

Veterans and one guest can attend for free. Additional guests or non-veterans can attend for $15. ​The registration deadline is Oct. 23, and reservations can be made by calling 248-451-1900. For more information, visit wbparks.org/heroes .

Holly Area Veterans Resource Center to host monthly Vet-to-Vet Dinner

Holly Area Veterans Resource Center to host monthly Vet-to-Vet Dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, (third Monday of the month) at American Legion Post 149. at 408 S. Saginaw St., Holly.

"The dinner is free to veterans and their families," co-director Joe Mishler said.

"The Center provides the dinner and if you want to bring a dish to pass that would be great. We usually have a speaker. They usually talk about issues or matters important to veterans and their families. You don't need a reservation. There is no sign in sheet. Our speaker for this month is Mike Schmid for U. S. Senator Gary Peter's office. He will be talking about issues important to veterans. We are also honoring a 100-year-old World War II veteran Charlotte Maxine (Eriksen) Charter. She is a US. Navy WAVES Veteran. Charlotte served 1944-1946 and was based at the US Navy Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Holly Area Veterans resource Center has been holding this dinner since before Covid. It gives veterans and their families the chance to get together and talk with each other. Join us for an evening of good conversation and good food."

• The Blue Star Mothers Troy, Michigan Chapter 198 to host annual Bowlin' for The Troops Fundraiser from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at Classic Lanes, at 2145 Avon Industrial Dr., Rochester Hills. Tickets should be purchased in advance by contacting Theresa Monarch Businesses or individuals can also sponsor a lane or a table if they'd like to help support. This event is 3 hours of bowling and includes shoes, 2 slices of pizza and pop for $20 or food only for $10. There will be raffle baskets, 50/50, and door prizes. The funds raised allow the Blue Star Mothers to do special things for the deployed troops. For more information, email Oakland County SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation) has extended "This Ride's on Us" program through September 2025. The program offers free, door-to-door public transportation for veterans and their caregivers. Initially set to end on Sept. 30, 2024, the program has been extended through a $530,000 grant from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. Veterans and their caregivers can schedule rides by calling 248-419-7984 and providing proof of service, such as DD214 discharge papers or a veteran ID.
