Westville Fire Deptartment wins proposition for expansion
Nov. 7—The Westville Area Fire Protection District asked for the money to expand and renovate their firehouse and voters in Westville gave a resounding 'yes.'
Aside from requesting a property tax increase from the residents of Westville to help fund what fire chief Mark Ames says are necessary renovations and expansion of the current Firehouse, the volunteer members of the department have also received assistance from some in the community who wanted to help out.
"We had a fundraiser today at Full Circle. They had a bake sale to benefit us and we had good support there, a good showing. Raised a little over a thousand dollars. So far, there seems to be a positive demeanor about the project," Ames said at a Open House the firehouse held Saturday, Nov. 2.
Kal's Road House in Westville also held a fundraiser for the fire house expansion project the previous weekend, Ames said, one which enabled the fire protection district to purchase $1,050 worth of Milwaukee Tools — something needed to help firefighters in extracting victims from burning cars, Ames said.
Now that the vote has passed, the next step is to begin searching for construction companies to bid on the project, Ames said.
In other county news, the Village of Muncie also secured a 'yes' vote in their proposition to remove the prohibition against selling liquor within village limits. The vote came about as a result of frustration over the prohibition preventing vendors from selling alcoholic products at their official Fall Festival last year, according to Mayor Synthia Lane.
"Since the vote happened now, we're hoping that we'll be able to pass an ordinance before next year's festival," Lane said.
