The University of Texas is down one wide receiver for the remainder of the season. Sophomore wideout Johntay Cook II, a former five-star recruit in the Longhorns' much-ballyhooed 2023 recruiting class, has been dismissed from the program, multiple sources confirmed to LoneStarLive.com Wednesday morning. Cook II's name was not in the NCAA Transfer Portal as of 9:15 a.m. CT, per a source with access to the national database. Orangebloods.com was first to report that Cook II leaving the program was in fact a dismissal. Cook II had eight catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns this season, but as the Longhorns' deep wide receiver corps. had taken shape over the last month, his role drastically decreased after an optimistic start. Per Pro Football Focus, Cook II's snap count Sept. 21 vs. Louisiana Monroe was 38. Over the next four games, he logged just 11 total snaps, a stretch that included zero snaps against Georgia on Oct. 19 and Vanderbilt on Oct. 26. Texas' wide receiver corps., which head coach Steve Sarkisian has lauded for its depth and versatility , has boiled down to Isaiah Bond , DeAndre Moore , and Matthew Golden as the primary options, with Ryan Wingo and Silas Bolden also seeing increased work of late. Looking towards the future, Sarkisian's 2025 recruiting class includes two five-star wide receivers in Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin's Jamier Ffrench and Sachse star Kaliq Lockett. Sarkisian is scheduled to conduct his normal Thursday Zoom call with local reporters at 11 a.m.
