The new figures were released by the CSO and show that the second and third most licenced car brands in the first 10 months of 2024 are Toyota (412) and Hyundai (328).

Kia was fourth on the list with 300 vehicles registered for the first time, while Skoda came in as the fifth most popular among Kerry drivers with 251 new licences.

In all, 3,419 new and second hand cars were licenced in Kerry in 2024, according to CSO data. Of those, 1,166 are petrol cars, 1,070 are diesel, and 249 are Electric Vehicles (EV).

Brian Kelly of EnergyEfficiency.ie said that the government's ambition of having 945,000 electric vehicles on the road by the end of the decade now seems unrealistic.

"So far, in 2024, 14 per cent of all new cars licensed for the first time were electric. This is compared with 19 per cent in the same period last year," he said.

"EV sales in Ireland have dropped off significantly this year, and trends show that the government's ambitious 2030 targets are not going to be met," he added.

Mr Kelly explained that the share of electric hybrids – excluding plug-in hybrids – among new private cars has increased from 17 per cent to 22 per cent 2024.

Hybrids accounted for 49 vehicles licenced in the county last month, while petrol (57) and diesel (53) cars continue to be most popular.

A total of 176 cars were licenced for the first time in Kerry in October, of which less than 10 per cent (17) were fully electric.
