Where is our wind???

E.Wright4 hr ago

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – While we have enjoyed a sunny, warm and dry stretch of weather here in Central New York during the middle of September, there is something missing.

Where is the wind??

The numbers are quite dramatic. Since September 10, the average wind speed in Syracuse is down by more than 60% compared to the September average.

Blame the jet stream.

During our stretch of quiet weather, the strongest jet stream winds aloft have been displaced well to our north into Canada. That means we are being bypassed by the main storm track and the winds deeply through the atmosphere over us are light. There have been times this week where winds above us at the jet stream level were less than 10 mph!

This lack of wind is a sign of the stagnant weather pattern in Central New York, along with the rainless stretch and the consistent temperatures in the upper 70s to mid-80s.

However, as the pattern breaks down early next week, look for our winds to begin to increase.
