Which candidates are Utahns searching for the most on Google?

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — With less than one month to go before Election Day , which candidates are getting the most searches on Google among Utahns?

ABC4.com consulted Google Trends , which tracks search traffic for different terms on the search giant. We looked at traffic over the last 30 days, as the final candidate list was released by the Utah Lt. Governor's Office on Oct. 3

SEE THE BALLOT: Who is running for office in Utah for the Nov. 5, 2024 general election?

A few words before we get into the results though:

  • This is mostly for entertainment purposes. Obviously, Google Trends can't tell us why people were searching for specific candidates — we only know who they searched for. While it could be interesting to see how search results compare to final election results, nothing here is scientific.

  • Depending on the news cycles between now and the election, these numbers could change wildly.

  • Where possible, we used the most popular search term for each candidate. For example, the term "Donald Trump" is more popular than "Donald J. Trump" even though he appears on the ballot with his initial. For this post, we're using the term that got the most results.

  • In this post, the search results cited are as of Oct. 16, 2024. The graphics in the post only show searches done in Utah.

  • U.S. President

polls showing former U.S. Pres. Donald Trump easily leads Vice-President Kamala Harris among Utah voters, Google shows that more Utahns have searched for Harris over the last month.

You can think of the numbers on the graph above as a sort of "strength score" on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 representing a peak. While Harris has consistently led Trump in searches over the last 30 days, searches have spiked for her in the last week.

    Utah Governor

Searches in the Utah governor's race have also spiked in the last week, and incumbent Republican Gov. Spencer Cox and Democratic challenger Brian Smith King are almost neck and neck at the top of the heap. Over time, Cox has edged out King in searches, but only by the slightest margin.

Things get interesting, however, if we make a slight change to the chart. If we take out lowest performer Tom Tomeny and replace him with write-in candidate Rep. Phil Lyman, we see more Utahns are searching for him than any other candidate.

    Utah Attorney General

Five candidates are facing off to replace outgoing Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, but Google searchers are looking for information on Republican Derek Brown more than any other. However, that isn't saying much, as search traffic among all candidates has been very low until the last few days.

Democratic nominee Rudy Bautista is a close second to Brown, though, and Google is projecting that searches for him are likely to continue to spike.

    U.S. Senate

U.S. Rep. John Curtis currently leads the three-candidate field for U.S. Senate among Google searchers, but that's only a recent development.

Carlton Bowen saw a search spike in late September, and Democrat Caroline Gleich outpaced the field last week. However, in the most current results, Curtis has pulled ahead and is projected to stay that way for the remainder of the week.

    U.S. House District 1

Over time, incumbent Republican Rep. Blake Moore has been neck and neck with his Democratic competitor Bill Campbell among Google searches. However, in the last week, Campbell has surged in search traffic among Utahns. Libertarian candidate Daniel Cottam, however, has at least kept pace with Moore.

    U.S. House District 2

Incumbent Republican Celeste Maloy is working on winning her first full term in office in November and she's also heading up search traffic in the race. That said, in the last couple of days, Democrat Nathaniel Woodward has spiked to meet her and even surpassed her in the last 24 hours.

    U.S. House District 3

Despite being the only race for U.S. House in Utah with no incumbent, the search traffic for candidates Mike Kennedy and Glenn Wright has been almost non-existent until this week. Neither candidate seems to have an advantage at this point.

    U.S. House District 4

Not unlike the previous races, very little search traffic has been logged regarding the candidates for U.S. House Dist. 4. However, incumbent Republican Burgess Owens easily leads the pack over the last month.
