(NEXSTAR) – Even though Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election, she secured wins against former President Donald Trump in both New York and New Jersey. Nonetheless, the race was closer than it was in 2020 or 2016.

There were multiple counties in both states that flipped red for the Republican ticket this election cycle.

Harris ended up with 55.8% of New York's vote as of Friday Nov. 8, down almost 5% from the 2020 election. New Jersey also saw the roughly the same dip in Democratic votes, currently sitting at 51.6% for Harris, down from 57.3% for Biden in 2020.

With that, Trump finished with more votes in both states than he did in both 2020 or 2016 — winning 44.2% of the votes in New York and 46.4% in New Jersey.

According to election maps provided by AP , Trump flipped three counties in New York to red during the 2024 election that were previously blue in 2020. Two of the counties were in upstate New York with Clinton and Essex voting Republican, and the third county was Broome, located south of Syracuse.

As for New Jersey, five counties flipped to red in the 2024 election. Two were in North Jersey (Passaic and Morris), while the other three were in South Jersey (Atlantic, Cumberland, Gloucester).

Currently as of Nov. 8, only 97% of the votes have been counted in New York and 94% have been counted in New Jersey. Meaning these counties could potentially still sway back towards blue in the coming days.

As for the country as a whole, the bulk vote was in Trump's favor with the former president receiving 50.7% of the popular vote. He was elected the 47th president of the U.S. on Wednesday.
