Wiggins High School volleyball keeps winning

A.Williams3 months ago

Someone once said “All I do is win” and that’s what the Wiggins High School Volleyball team keeps doing.

The Tigers won the 2A state championship 3-2 over Sedgwick County a few weeks ago and celebration is still going on in Wiggins.

“We’re still kind of on a little bit of a high,” said WHS volleyball coach, Michelle Baker.

“We have great fans and a great community that has always supported us,” Baker said. “It’s been pretty wonderful.”

Now those fans have more celebratory fuel as Baker was named 2A Coach of the Year and WHS senior Tyleigh Fehseke was named 2A Player of the Year. This is the second time in four years Baker has been named coach of the year as she named it in 2021 when WHS won state. Also in that year, WHS player Jenna White was Player of the Year.

“It’s a great feeling, but it’s nothing compared to seeing those girls winning that state championship,” Baker said of the honor.

“Being named 2A Player of the Year is something as a little girl I never would have thought I would be able to accomplish,” Fehseke wrote in an email. “I am the type of person that once they set a goal to do something, they do everything in their power to accomplish said goal. This was one of those times.”

Baker was swift to credit her coaching staff for everything they do for the team that helps WHS volleyball be as successful as it is. From longtime assistant Erin Kerr to Brian Baker and others, Baker couldn’t credit staff enough.

“When I think of a great coach, I think of someone who has a love for the girls, the game, and the program,” Fehseke wrote. “A person who knows a balance of being hard on you and being your friend. Coach Baker is that person. She is the most deserving coach out there for this award and I am honored to have won Player of the Year alongside her.”

Baker, who strives to make sure she always speaks about the team not individuals, said Fehseke was a four-year varsity starter and will end her WHS career with two state championships.

“What she does and how she is as a team leader is really remarkable,” Baker said.

Baker added for how great a player Fehseke is, she also knew she had a talented team around her and didn’t have to carry the whole workload throughout the season.

After graduation, Fehseke will continue her volleyball career in Texas as she’s committed to playing volleyball for Dallas Baptist University where she’ll be studying pre-medicine and biology. However, what she, Baker, and the Tigers have done in four years should leave no doubt with anyone across the state that WHS is one of the best programs regardless of classification. And that pride of accomplishment will be with Fehseke even when she’s in a new state soon.

“I never would have thought the last time I put a Wiggins Volleyball jersey on would have come so fast, but it has,” she wrote. “I could not have asked for a better career, accomplishing all I have ever wanted, and will always be a Wiggins Tiger at heart.”
