Winter storm expected to hit Santa Fe hard Wednesday night
Nov. 5—Meteorologists are urging Santa Feans to prepare for a major winter storm that is set to impact Central and Northern New Mexico starting Wednesday night — and could bring high wind gusts and potentially large snow totals to the region through Friday.
Power outages and road closures are likely during that period, including along Interstate 25 between Santa Fe and the Colorado border, according to a Tuesday briefing from the National Weather Service.
"Be prepared for travel impacts. If people haven't already started preparing, tonight and early tomorrow is the time to get anything prepared you may need in case there are any power outages," said Carter Greulich, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, in an interview Tuesday.
Greulich said the state's capital city could see 7 to 8 inches of snow from the front, according to the latest forecast, an amount that could lead to school closures and other shutdowns.
Wind gusts could be a "consistent anywhere from 12 to 15 knots, potentially getting up to 17- to 18-knot gusts, mainly in the early hours of Thursday morning," Greulich said, noting the heavier winds would be concentrated father south in the Albuquerque area.
