An out-of-control driver slammed into a liquor store in East Hollywood early Sunday morning, nearly destroying the storefront and sending merchandise flying.

Preliminary reports indicate that the crash occurred at the store, located near Berendo Street and Santa Monica Boulevard, just after 2:30 a.m.

Video from the scene shows the Honda CR-V with its heavily damaged front end inside the store. The force of the crash bent the metal columns that separated the windowpanes.

Food products and other merchandise were also seen scattered across the store, and it is believed that an ATM and a lotto machine were destroyed.

While it was initially thought the vehicle may have been used as a means to break into the store for a smash-and-grab robbery, the Los Angeles Police Department later confirmed to KTLA 5's Erin Myers that it was a motorist who lost control of their vehicle.

The female driver was given a sobriety test and passed, officers said.

It is not known what caused her to lose control of her car.

The owners of the store were seen beginning to clean up the mess as the sun rose on Sunday. They told Myers that they have been operating the store at that location for over a decade, working every single day of the week.

The store will likely be closed until further notice as the owners survey the damage.
