WOODMERE, Ohio – A concert by Forecast, an instrumental jazz band based in Cleveland, will kick off the village's 80th anniversary celebration. The event begins at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Garfield Memorial Church Pepper Pike Family Life Center, at 3650 Lander Road in Pepper Pike. Following mingling and refreshments, the concert is set for 7 p.m. Sia Nyorkor, former news anchor and reporter for Channel 19 (WOIO-TV) in Cleveland, will be the mistress of ceremonies for the event. The event is free and open to the community. Attendees are asked to bring either a toy for Toys for Tots or non-perishable canned goods for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. The celebration continues at noon Nov. 18 – the village's actual 80th birthday – with a Cake and Punch Social at Village Hall, 27899 Chagrin Blvd. Guests will enjoy refreshments and share memories with neighbors and friends. This casual gathering will be a chance for the community to come together, honoring Woodmere's journey while looking toward the future, according to a news release. The 80th anniversary celebration is an event-filled tribute to the village's rich history, vibrant community spirit and dedication to growth, the news release stated. Founded Nov. 18, 1944, Woodmere has transformed from a rural enclave into a thriving community, and residents and visitors are invited to honor the legacy through a series of special events, the release continued. "The 80th anniversary is more than a milestone – it's an opportunity to reflect on shared history and renewed commitment to making Woodmere an even greater place to live, work and grow," Mayor Ben Holbert said in the news release. "We're looking forward to honoring the past while embracing a bright and prosperous future for our village." The celebration will extend into next year, featuring activities that highlight Woodmere's history and culture. Planned events include a historical panel discussion at the Orange branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, offering residents and historians a chance to discuss the village's legacy; and a pictorial gallery display, showcasing the village's growth through the decades. Dates for and more details about these events are to be announced.
