PLYMOUTH – The goal of the Wyoming Valley West girls swim team is to
improve with every meet.
If Friday’s meet against Meyers was any indication, great things can be
expected from the Spartans by the end of the season. Valley West finished
Conference swimming.
“It was one heck of a meet,” said Valley West coach Frank Tribendis. “We
really swam fast. I’m extremely pleased.”
Tribendis was especially pleased with the total team effort. Fourteen
different swimmers and two divers placed for the Spartans. “It’s depth,
strong depth. It’s going to be everybody continuing to step up.”
Even though the entire team contributed to the victory, freshman Shana
Welch couldn’t help but stand out in her debut performance. Welch took first
in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke, and was part of the
winning 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams.
“As you can see, she has a lot of fun. But she’s a competitor and really
focused, and that’s the key,” Tribendis said.
Kelly Chamberlain also won four events, placing first in the 100 butterfly
and 200 freestyle, and joining Welch on the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle
relay teams.
Ainsley Maloney took first in diving with a score of 170.25. Beth Anne
Owens of Meyers placed second. Owens’ was the only top-three finisher for
Meyers, but coach Jeff Ney was still happy with the outcome of the meet.
“We went up against the powerhouse of the Wyoming Valley, arguably, and
the girls came in and handled it well,” said Ney. “We have a very young
team, more experienced divers, and we’re improving every day.” 200 MEDLEY
