Yankees 2023 Roster Report Card: Miscellaneous Pitchers

We’re reaching the end of our Yankee report card series for the 2023 season, and we’ve taken a look at all the major players from last year’s disappointing season. Now, it’s time to remember some guys. In this post, we’ll look back at the miscellaneous pitchers from this past year, who weren’t quite around long enough to merit a full post. Collective Grade: Matt Bowman
Free agent Bowman was one of a couple September call-up bullpen reinforcements, and, to be honest, he played like it. His debut went decently, as he got out of an eighth inning jam against the Red Sox , but he gave up four runs over three innings in his next two outings. After the season, he was outrighted and removed from the 40-man roster, but elected free agency , so it’s unlikely that we’ll see him in a Yankees uniform again. Colten Brewer
Free agent After purchasing him from the Rays in late March, the Yankees used Brewer as a long man for three appearances in April before releasing him July. He ended up going to Japan and signing with the Hanshin Tigers, helping them break their long Japan Series drought. That is far more notable than anything he did with the Yankees this year.Jimmy Cordero
Free agent Cordero was an early season regular as a middle reliever, until he was suspended in July for violating the league’s domestic violence policy . That took him out for the Yankees’ equation for 2023, and likely forever, as he was outrighted after the season.Deivi García
In the White Sox organization Oh, Deivi ... After impressing in 2020, a disastrous 2021 and ‘22 took him off the radar for having a legitimate role with the Yankees in 2023 and beyond. He ended up only briefly appearing this season before getting removed from the 40-man for space and getting claimed by the White Sox.Yoendrys Gómez
Pre-arbitration After putting up solid minor league numbers of the year, the Yankees briefly called up Gómez in September, where he was good in his only appearance. He could be in the running for at least a “Scranton Shuttle” spot next year.Matt Krook

Free agent McAllister was a nice story when he appeared in September, making his Yankee debut 17 years after the team drafted him, and 13 after they traded him to Cleveland for Austin Kearns. Unfortunately after a decent start, his stats weren’t great.Anthony Misiewicz
Free agent The Yankees were Misiewicz’s third team of the 2023, and he put up fine but unremarkable numbers in a very small sample size.Frankie Montas
Free agent He’s more known than most of the rest of this list, but with only 1.1 innings under his belt, we didn’t give Montas a full report card, so we’ll throw him in here. There’s not much to say other than that he had one start that went perfectly fine, but in total the 2022 trade deadline deal for him is still pretty bad. He’s now set to be a free agent, and while there are some rumors that the Yankees might be interested in bringing him back, that could be it for his tenure in the Bronx.Luke Weaver
Free agent A former first round draft pick and top 100 prospect with the Cardinals, the Yankees brought in Weaver to make some spot starts with the rotation a mess late in the season. He wasn’t unimpressive, and there might be something worth taking another look at with him in 2024.Ryan Weber
Free agent The Yankees brought back Weber for a second season in 2023, and he did okay until going down with a forearm strain in June , knocking him out for the rest of the season. Bringing him back for multiple seasons shows the Yankees like him to some degree, but he’s now a free agent and the situation surrounding his health is unknown.Greg Weissert
Pre-arbitration Weissert went back and forth between Triple-A and the majors a couple times this season. He’s been excellent in the minors, but still hasn’t quite got a handle on the big leagues yet. He’s still in the Yankees’ organization, so he’ll likely be in contention for some sort of role in 2024.
