Yankees fans should ‘set the bar low’ in free agency, New York host says

Don’t believe every rumor that you hear — or read. That’s the message WFAN’s Evan Robers had for Yankees fans on his afternoon show with ex- Giants running back Tiki Barber on Monday.FIXING THE YANKEES:Sign up HERE for our twice-weekly newsletter on the offseason changes After finishing the 2023 season 82-80, their worst record in a 162-game season since 1992, and missing out on the postseason for the first time since 2016, the Yankees have been linked to just about every major free agent on the market. They’ve also been rumored to be in active conversations with the San Diego Padres regarding a trade for Juan Soto . After caller all but guaranteed Soto and Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the Yankees, Evan lent some advice to fans: “It represents a lot of Yankee fans who have very high expectations for this offseason,” Roberts said, via Audacy . “You want to set the bar low. What I’m sensing from Yankee fans...is that your bar is insanely high. “Could the Yankees get Juan Soto? They could, I think they will. Could they get Yamamoto? Sure. But there seems to be this belief that you’re going to. What worries me for my friends that are Yankees fans is that you’re gonna be incredibly disappointed...just because you’re linked to a guy, that doesn’t mean anything.” Fans have been disappointed with a few recent Yankees acquisitions — or lack thereof. They didn’t even try to get Bryce Haper ahead of the 2019 season and have given up on decent players in trades that turned out to be duds. They dealt a Top 100 prospect in Ezequiel Durán for Joey Gallo , swapped Jordan Montgomery for Harrison Bade r and traded Gary Sánchez and Gio Urshela in a deal for Josh Donaldson to name a few. Roberts urges fans not to go down the same path again — temper expectations until a deal actually takes place.
