5-year-old airlifted after Erwin crash involving school bus

ERWIN, N.Y. ( WETM ) — A 5-year-old was airlifted after a three-vehicle crash that involved a school bus in Erwin on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the New York State Police Department, troopers responded to a crash involving a 2018 Dodge, a 2015 Toyota, and a 2018 Addison Central School bus on state Route 417 in the Town of Erwin at about 4:09 p.m. on Oct. 16.

Police say the Dodge was traveling east on state Route 417 and didn't stop for the school bus, which was in the westbound lane. The Dodge hit the back of the Toyota, which was stopped in the eastbound lane for the school bus. After it was hit, the Toyota struck the side of the bus.

A 5-year-old who was inside the Toyota was injured and transported to Strong Memorial Hospital. Police say the child is in stable condition.

The 62-year-old school bus driver, the six juveniles who were on the bus, and the driver of the Dodge were not injured. The driver of the Dodge was issued three traffic tickets returnable to the Erwin Town Court.

The New York State Police Department, the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, the Gang Mills Fire Department, American Medical Response Ambulance, Tuscarora Ambulance, the Addison Fire Department, the Campbell Fire Department, and LifeNet of New York responded to the scene.

The crash is currently under investigation.
